Inaugurated in early April, the Aquatic Center will host the water polo, diving and artistic swimming events in Saint-Denis during the Paris 2024 games. It will then be open to all from June 2025. Its energy-efficient design is exemplary.
Present at the inauguration on April 4, the President of the French Republic underlined the innovative aspect of this new aquatic center, and in particular its wooden roof.
A canopy like no other
With 4,200 square meters of photovoltaic panels, the solar canopy built and installed by EDF ENR on the roof of the building is the largest of its kind in France. It generates part of the electricity consumed on site. A system for recovering heat from humid air also heats the pools, while energy consumption is optimized in real time. As a result, the site is 90% powered by renewable or recovered energy. A performance that perfectly meets Paris 2024's objective of halving its carbon footprint compared with previous editions.
A cornerstone facility for Seine-Saint-Denis
The new aquatic center has also been designed with the post-Olympic period in mind. From next year, it will become a truly multi-sports facility (fitness, climbing, 5-a-side soccer, 3X3 basketball, skatepark...). It will even be possible to enjoy lunch or a sports recycling shop.
A strong response to a national challenge
More than a million people will be able to swim here every year, especially the very young. With their different sizes and adjustable depths, the pools are specially designed for learning to swim. An excellent prospect for the Seine-Saint-Denis département, which has a shortage of swimming pools, and where fewer than half of all children know how to swim by the time they start secondary school.
On the roof of the Saint-Denis Aquatic Center, the 4,200m² of photovoltaic panels - manufactured in France with a reduced carbon footprint - will produce 20% of the site's electricity consumption.
